Top 10 Ways To Live A Longer, Happier Life
by Alan Joel

The reason most Americans are deeply in consumer debt and not as wealthy as they would like to be is because they are living high on the hog while earning a skinny salary. If you want to be wealthy, the key is to live skinny when you have skinny earnings. Living skinny eventually leads to a fat checkbook. With a fat checkbook, you can easily live high on the hog without worry.

Want to live skinny and start saving? Here are five rules for living skinny:

  1. USE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE.
Instead of buying something new to fill a need, spend the time to convert what you have to new uses. When you don't have money, time is your asset.

  2. AVOID BUYING IN BULK.
Spending a little more to buy in smaller quantities is worth it when you don't have much money. Don't tie up what money you have in items you won't use for months or years.

  3. SPEND FOR MAINTENANCE.
Maintenance is one area where you don't want to be thrifty. Spend what it takes to keep your car, house, and health in good shape. Most unexpected and high expenses are the result of poor maintenance.

  4. RECYCLE.
When it's time to get rid of items, donate them rather than throwing them away. You'll help someone else live skinny. If you need something, buy it used-it costs less and is usually just as good.

  5. LIVE JUICY.
Living skinny doesn't mean you have to be miserly. You can still live juicy. Pick and choose one or two areas where you will indulge yourself (within a pre-set budget, of course!). Living skinny is no fun if you can't enjoy it.
