With summer here, are you just itching to get outside? The reality for many of us however, is that we are stuck indoors working on computers or at desks with fluorescent lights overhead instead of out soaking up sunshine and connecting with nature. We may get a break during the day to have lunch outside, but that half hour or hour doesn’t quite do the job on accessing the health benefits that come with being outside in nature. Here are a few reasons to make sure you put getting outside more on your to-do list this summer.
Reduce Stress – We all deal with various levels of stress and become overwhelmed with all the daily tasks we are responsible for from time to time. Outside activities such as hiking, gardening, and walking are all ways research has confirmed can reduce stress. Getting away from the chaos of city life and experiencing the calm, quiet environment nature provides as well as the soothing smells of trees and flowers is a great way to recharge your spirit, mind and body. If you live in a more city environment, find a state park, BLM land, hiking trails, a river or lake, or even a city park to get out and enjoy all that nature has to offer.
Get Your Vitamin D – Vitamin D is necessary for your body to absorb calcium. Children need this vitamin to build strong bone and adults need it to maintain bone health. Being out in the sunshine is the best way to naturally give your body the Vitamin D it needs. Be sure to observe precautions against damage from the sun to your skin while getting out and soaking up those much needed rays.
Be Happy – Natural light is reported to give your mood a boost. Getting outside for exposure to sunlight is a great way to improve mood. Not getting enough time in the sun can actually lower production of serotonin and dopamine while be out in the sunlight releases endorphins.
Have Fun Exercising – You know the health benefits of exercise. Everything from weight loss to heart health benefits from exercising. Summer is a great time to experience all sorts of exercise that is also fun. Canoeing or kayaking, hiking, biking, skating, walking, swimming and lots more summer activities can help you get extra exercise while having fun at the same time.
New Earth invites you this summer to find any excuse to get outdoors more and experience the health benefits this can provide. We would also invite you to share your outdoor experiences on social media using #NewEarthLife and give others ideas on how to live a New Earth Life.
